SUP Adventure Tour - Cypress Island
Covid-19 Notice – In the current Phase 2, tours are held as privates only and available for 1-4 people. Masks required on shore, social distancing on land and shore.
One of my favorite SUP adventure tours in the San Juan Islands, Cypress is a beautiful island with rich marine life and spectacular views.
Located north of Anacortes and across from Guemes Island, the views from Cypress remind me of Southeast Alaska. Porpoise, minke whales, bald eagles and sometimes Orcas can be spotted from the island.
The tour is rated Intermediate skill level because swift tidal current can flow up Bellingham Channel, which is our access to camping on Cypress Head and Pelican Beach. We may encounter wind and some small waves.
With careful planning of currents, you will learn how to depart Anacortes by crossing Guemes Channel, then paddle north to Cypress assisted by tidal current. And the next day return using opposite flowing currents.
Roundtrip Paddling Distance: 10-15 miles
Day 1 – Launching from Anacortes, we’ll time our departure at the end of the ebb to cross Guemes Channel to Guemes Island. Then use the flood to paddle up and across Bellingham Channel to Cypress Island.
Once on the island, we’ll set up camp at either Cypress Head or Pelican Beach depending on group skill level and campsite availability.
You’ll have a choice to relax and enjoy the epic views and sounds of the channel or hike to 750′ Eagle Cliff for extensive San Juan Islands views.
Day 2 – After breakfast, we’ll either continue exploring the island or depending on tides and weather, pack up and paddle back to our put-in using the opposite direction of currents which brought us to the island.
Skill Prerequisites: Intermediate +
You have taken our SUP Basics 2 class and/or have proven experience standing in bumps from boat wakes and/or wind. You can paddle 3 miles without stopping, can fall and get back on easily in conditions. You can paddle up wind, in side-winds and can paddle over small waves standing. Your Half Day class can include paddling techniques to prepare for this tour.
Suggested Classes for this tour – Deception Pass Tidal Rapids Training and/or SUP Basics 2.
