Blake Island Paddle Overnight Skills Trip

Covid-19 Notice – In current Phase 2, available for 1-4 people from the same household. Masks required on shore, social distancing on land and shore. All gear is cleaned. 

One of our favorite and most easily accessible trips on Puget Sound, the Blake Island Paddle Overnight will introduce you to this beautiful island with rich marine life, epic city, Sound and mountain views and great hiking.  Alternatively, we may go to Hope Island south (by Olympia) or Skagit Island near Deception Pass depending on conditions.

The Blake Island paddle overnight can be set up for you as just a tour or a skills based trip where you learn marine navigation, open water paddling and trip planning skills. If you are new paddle camping, you will also cover camping skills.

We will hold a Zoom meeting prior to the trip to go over board/boat outfitting, packing and what to bring.

After the trip we’ll send you a comprehensive guide for paddling trips including skills learned on your trip plus additional resources to help with future trips.

The trip is rated Advanced Beginner to Intermediate skill level due to open water crossings and possible wind, currents and boat wakes.

This is a Self Catered (you cook your own food) trip with a max capacity 4 people from the same household during Covid-19.

Day 1
– Meet, safety check, risk assessment at launch, introduce navigation getting a bearing to the point, ferry angles based on wind and current, how to pack a kayak
Land and make camp – discuss boat location on beach – above the high tide line
– Head out to do a circumnavigation or explore – discuss assessment of skills seen heading out, on land stroke clinic, practice lesson on the paddle, sight see
– Free time – hike, explore or take it easy
– Gear discussion – making life easy, stove options and why, tips and tricks for drying gear overnight
– Open discussion or relax / down time
Day 2
– After breakfast, we’ll determine whether to cover skills topics (below) or take it easy, go for hike or exploratory paddle
– Strokes class so you can paddle faster with less effort and minimize long term injuries
– Rescue practice so you can self rescue anywhere or help a friend
– Skills practice. We’ll continue to look at navigation or anything you want to work on.
– Balance practice so you can paddle in rough water, in currents and waves so you can push your limits safely while having fun
– Open discussion to cover any skills or topics you want to learn about. Or relax / down time
Day 3
After breakfast or lunch, we’ll pack up and return to Manchester, Southworth or Seattle

This is a Self Catered meaning you cook your own food. We can supply cooking gear.

Max capacity 4 from the same household or bubble. (plus 1-2 guides) during Covid-19.

Roundtrip Paddling Distance: 6-8 miles RT, (3-4 miles per day with breaks) Distance depends on launch points and conditions.

Duration: 2 nights. (Longer or shorter duration or day trips ok. Contact me to discuss)

Skill Level: Adv Beginner and Intermediate. Must have some open water experience and be able to paddle 3-6 miles per day. Take our Kayak Basics classes to prepare.

You should have your own kayak, surf ski or sup. Contact us if you need a boat rental.

$20 – Toasty wetsuit, booties, gloves, hood, leash, lifejacket.

$30 – Touring Kayak or SUP rental

$20 – Tent, MSR backpacking stove and cookware, Thermarest sleeping pad. *Bring your own sleeping bag during Covid.

Skill Prerequisites: Adv Beginner to Intermediate:

You have taken our Kayak Basics 1 or 2 classes and/or have proven paddling in small waves and wind. You can paddle 2 miles without stopping and can self-rescue.
