Already know kayaking basics and are seeking the next level? Are you planning a kayaking overnight trip or long day tour? Want to improve your rough water skills?  If so, this class if for you.

In this class, you’ll learn:

  • An efficient injury free forward stroke
  • Advanced turning skills
  • Using finesse over power to accomplish your paddling goals
  • Bomber bracing skills
  • Rough water skills
  • If available learn to surf boat wakes and freighter waves
  • Pro tips on how to outfit your kayak for trips and rough water
  • How to paddle in wind (upwind, side and downwind)
  • Learn how currents work in Shilshole Bay
  • How to read tide tables and read marine forecasts
  • Kayak repair tips
  • Trip preparation


Duration: 4 hrs / Class size: 1-4

Schedule: Contact us to set up a time that works for you.

Location: If you have your own kayaks, we’ll meet at the Ballard Elks Club for paddling on Shilshole Bay in Seattle. If you need to rent kayaks, we’ll meet at Aqua Verde on Portage Bay (by the UW)

Who Should Attend? You should know how to swim and be in moderate physical shape. This is a class for intermediate

Video Feedback – We may shoot video of your class to provide additional feedback to improve your skills.

Class Follow-up: We’ll send you a summary after class of what you learned and a list of local marine weather forecasting and tidal stations and apps. You’re welcome to join our Facebook alumni page for class updates, gear deals, trip reports and to meet other paddlers.


Group Rate: 379 per person. Classes with 3 – 4 students.
Semi Private (2 people): 479 per person.

*Cost includes free use of gear: stable kayaks, paddle, PFD, wetsuit, booties. gloves and neoprene hoods.
